In line with the Emirate of Sharjah’s strategic vision for developing a sustainable environmental infrastructure, the Department of Municipal Affairs and Bee’ah signed a pivotal contract to establish and operate an integrated waste management project in Al Dhaid City. This significant step aims to unify and develop the waste management system, encompassing sorting, treatment, material recovery, and safe disposal, across all municipalities in the Central and Eastern Regions of the Emirate, adhering to the highest international engineering standards. The project will contribute to enhancing the recovery of recyclable materials and supporting the circular economy in Sharjah, thereby improving material utilization efficiency and reducing reliance on landfills. The agreement was signed at Bee’ah’s headquarters by His Excellency Sultan Mohammed bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, in the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Engineer Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of the Department. Representing Bee’ah were Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board, and Fahad Ali Shehail, Chief Sustainability Officer, along with official delegations including heads of municipal councils and directors of municipalities across the Emirate. The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from Bee’ah, including officials from the emirate’s municipalities. In this context, His Excellency Sultan Mohammed bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, affirmed that this project practically translates the objectives of the National Agenda aimed at achieving environmental sustainability and institutional integration. He explained that the Department is always guided by the wise vision and sound directives of the leadership of the Emirate of Sharjah regarding the necessity of upgrading infrastructure and municipal services. He pointed out that signing this contract with Bee’ah to establish the integrated central complex in the Maghsa area of ​​Al Dhaid City represents a strategic milestone in combining municipal efforts with the advanced expertise possessed by Bee’ah. The project provides a sophisticated engineering and environmental system serving seven municipalities in the Emirate and contributes directly to supporting the National Agenda for Sustainability and enhancing the integrated waste management system, thus ensuring a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations. He pointed out that the strategic partnership with Bee'ah aims to implement the highest international standards and practices in waste sorting and treatment operations and ensure safe and sustainable disposal, thus achieving tangible environmental and economic returns that contribute to improving the quality of life and supporting the path of sustainable development in the emirate. Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO and Vice Chairman of Bee’ah, stated: “This project represents a new strategic milestone in the development of the waste management sector in the Emirate of Sharjah. It embodies the depth of our partnership with the Department of Municipal Affairs in adopting advanced solutions that enhance environmental infrastructure and support sustainable development goals. Through this integrated central complex, the project will unify waste management operations and increase their operational efficiency across the municipalities of the Central and Eastern Regions. This will be achieved by employing the latest technologies in sorting, treatment, and safe disposal of waste, thereby improving service quality, increasing material recovery rates, and promoting the principles of the circular economy. This project underscores Bee’ah’s commitment to continuously developing innovative waste management solutions and supporting the Emirate of Sharjah’s vision of diverting all waste from landfills. Building on the achievements already made in this field, where the waste diversion rate in the Emirate of Sharjah has reached 93%, one of the highest in the region, paving the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.” The new complex spans over 430,000 square meters and will house a comprehensive system of state-of-the-art recycling and treatment facilities. These include dedicated facilities for recycling construction and demolition waste, recovering materials, and treating industrial wastewater and animal waste – a first for the emirate. The complex will also feature a waste-to-energy production facility and an engineered landfill designed to the highest international environmental standards. To complement this objective, the project includes a network of strategically distributed transfer stations to ensure comprehensive coverage of various cities in the Central and Eastern Regions, including Al Dhaid, Al Bataeh, Mleiha, Khor Fakkan, Kalba, and Dibba Al Hisn. This will significantly improve the efficiency of waste collection, transportation, and treatment operations across the emirate. On the technical and operational level of the project, which is based in the “Maghsa” area of ​​Al Dhaid city, the complex serves the municipalities of the Central Region, which include Al Dhaid, Al Madam, Maliha, and Al Bataeh, in addition to the municipalities of the Eastern Region, namely Kalba, Khor Fakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn. It will provide an advanced infrastructure for sorting, processing, material recovery, and safe disposal of waste through three successive implementation phases, starting with the establishment of transfer stations, primary treatment facilities, and engineered landfills. Then it includes the establishment and operation of specialized facilities and systems for the treatment of municipal and industrial waste, leading to the integrated operation of the complex according to the highest standards of efficiency and environmental sustainability.
